EX-BURGLAR SHARES SIMPLE WHEEL HACK TO AVOID CAR BEING STOLEN 'THEY'LL MOVE TO NEXT CAR!'

Between March 2021 and March 2022, there were 108,542 in England and Wales a large increase compared to the previous year. Michael Fraser is a former burglar and is now a home security expert, using his knowledge to help people keep their homes and safe.

He spoke on BBC News about one simple trick that can help drivers avoid the risk of having their car stolen.

More than 40 police forces have pledged to attend all burglaries, with officers to attend regardless of location and what has been stolen.

A recent report found that most victims of burglary don't get the justice they deserve.

He said: "Burglary will never change because it's so easy and you're more likely to get away with burglary than anything else because it's not looked at seriously.

"Burglars are very lazy people. If you do anything to secure your property, he'll move next door.

"Ninety-nine percent of us just do nothing. It's just like car crime.

"If you look out on the street, ninety-nine percent of us parallel park with the wheels dead straight.

"One percent will turn the wheels into the kerb or towards another car. You'll never find that car will be stolen.

"Exactly the same with property. You do anything to secure your property, he'll move on to next door."

The BBC presenter, Joanna Gosling, said she had never heard about the car wheels method, calling it "a simple thing to change".

Mr Fraser continued, saying: "Don't put things on the window, sticker them on and then take them off.

"You leave the mark there and the burglar will know you've got something in the car, and hell break the window to get in."

Data has shown that Ford and Vauxhall vehicles are the most at risk of being stolen, making up more than 30 percent of theft claims.

Looking back since 2018, the top five areas in the UK most prone to car thefts, totalled and ranked by volume of claims each year, include North Coventry, Harrow, East Birmingham, Brent and Greater London.

Alex Cross, insurance director at Tesco Bank, warned drivers that car thieves and their tactics were becoming increasingly sophisticated.

He added that it wasn't a "smash and grab job anymore", especially with car technology developing quickly.

Mr Cross urged drivers to keep their keys stored away at night, especially if the car has keyless entry.

Thieves can use relay technology to bounce the signal from the car fob to a device which can boost the signal and unlock the car.

A faraday pouch can be used to block any signals coming from the key fob, or drivers can simply store the keys away from any doors or windows which could be unlocked.

They can also keep in mind where they park, with a garage being the best bet, or if a well-lit or residential area.

Others will then have a clear view of the vehicle and may receive a lot of foot traffic, putting would-be thieves from trying their luck.
